Alzheimer's Disease ... (Dementia). Alzheimer’s is a degenerative brain disorder that gradually destroys a person’s memory and ability to learn, make judgmentally, communicate and carry out daily activities. As the disease progresses, patients may also experience changes in personality -- such as anxiety, suspiciousness or agitation -- as well as delusions or hallucinations. There isn't a cure yet, but as researchers gain more insight into the biology of the disease there is new hope for preventing the onset of the disease and treating it when it does occur. (See Reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s disease for some of the latest findings – from 50Plus.com, a service of CARP – the Canadian Association of Retired Persons – 45+ years - “CARP is a national, non-partisan, non-profit organization committed to a ‘New Vision of Ageing for Canada’ promoting social change that will bring financial security, equitable access to health care and freedom from discrimination. Our mandate is to promote and protect the interests, rights and quality of life for Canadians as we age. ”).
There are many other brain disorders and mental disorders and illnesses listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), published by the American Psychiatric Association.
